USCHS CHORAL MUSIC WITH DESCRIPTIONS

77 Story of the Twelve (tom scott-Gospel Christmas) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Fabulous) 77
1976-1977 – “THE STORY OF THE TWELVE” (A Cappella). By Tom Scott and arranged by Tom Scott – sung by the PANTHEON CHOIR at USCHS on December 17, 1976. This performance was conducted by DAVID BREWTON, President of the Pantheon Choir that year. I really like spirituals and this anthem was no exception. The composition and arrangement by TOM SCOTT was enormously wonderful. I made NO changes when we practiced and learned this song --- I didn’t have to. Everything was there !!! A Cappella music for the Choir is always a double challenge. With the words being such a “tongue-twister” and entrances of the vocal parts “on top of each other,” it became a dangerous but ultimately a thrilling, thrilling endeavor !!!!! I remember that after the Choir had learned the piece I asked many, many members to try out (in Choir-not as a separate audition) for the speaking parts. As soon as I heard the “correct voice” for the part, I said “You Got It.” From then on it was a matter of the performance. I spoke with David Brewton that year about conducting this on the Christmas Concert. He accepted and this is the performance that you hear with David conducting. In his own right he had worked with me for four years as accompanist, Chanteclair, Pantheon Choir member, and President of the Choir in his senior year (1976-1977). I felt extremely confident that he and the Choir would do a fabulous job, and they DID !!!!! My description of this particular performace is “FABULOUS” and for once I didn’t even have to wave my arms. Standing off-stage was my place ---- so it is fitting that I do not receive any credit --- everyone else does !!! Please enjoy their work !!! THANK YOU PANTHEON CHOIR & DAVID BREWTON for this beautiful performance that we can all remember and enjoy again and again. THANK YOU ---- SINCERELY, Mr. G.

A Carol For All (jay hitt - Christmas) - Kim Lord @ USC -Pgh (Just Beautiful!!!)
1972-1973 ---- “A CAROL FOR ALL” – performed by KIM LORD on December 20, 1972 at the USCHS Christmas Concert. The song was written by Jay Hitt. Kim came into the audition with a sheet of paper with a melody and words written on it. No Chordal harmony - no tempo – etc. ---- just, what is called in the popular music business as a “Lead Sheet” but, in this case, without the Chords. I asked Kim all kind of questions about the piece but she couldn’t give me an exact idea of what Jay Hitt had intended. So I worked on this myself and recalled her back when I had finished working out the Chordal progressions and accompaniment. When she returned to sing it for me, I accompanied her. I was thrilled with her rendition and performance. I knew it had to be on the Christmas Concert. And so it was !!!! – What a remarkable performance ---- the song fit her and her voice so well ---- It was just ALL THERE !!!! ----- Nothing had to be changed. Since I was the only one who worked out the Piano accompaniment and knew it, I accompanied her at the Christmas Concert. I THANK KIM LORD for this BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE !!!!! ---- I thank Jay for writing it !!!! A little aside: ---- To this day I still don’t know if this result is what the composer had intended. ENJOY EVERYONE ------ I STILL DO, AND WILL ALWAYS !!!!!! ------ Mr. G.

A Soalin' (Christmas) -Sara Meador,Ed Kramer,Steve Kramer @ USC -Pgh (Just Beautiful!!)
1975-1976 ---- “A ‘SOALIN’ - from Traditional Christmas songs and performed by SARAH MEADOR, ED KRAMER, & STEVE KRAMER at USCHS on December 19, 1975 at the Christmas Concert. What is there to think after listening to such a gorgeous arrangement and performance of this song????? Nothing but Accolades !!!!! Nothing but BRAVO !!! BRAVO !!!!! Such a wonderful blend --- and nothing short of MARVELOUS !!!! Does anyone else feel compelled to listen to every word and singer, and try to digest everything that is musically going on? It’s almost impossible since they sing several songs at once and at times three different songs all mixing together so harmoniously !!!! Quite a marvelous TRIUMPH ---- If you’re trying to decipher all the words you will have to listen multiple times ---- good luck!!! ……… I WONDER IF THEY KNEW HOW GOOD THIS PERFORANCE WAS?? ------ I know we will all listen and say ----- “SO, SO BEAUTIFUL !!!!!” This medley was arranged by a student at USCHS ---- JON EGANHOUSE. He wasn’t in the Choral Department as a singer, but was a student of mine in the “Music Composition and Theory Class” that I was teaching. Such a wonderful undertaking and great accomplishment. BRAVO JON !!! THANK YOU SARA, ED, STEVE, & JON for making this possible, and sharing a wonderful performance to remember forever !!!! THANK YOU !!! ----- Mr. G. “Hey ho, nobody home, meat nor drink nor money have I none Yet shall we be merry, Hey ho, nobody home. Hey ho, nobody home, Meat nor drink nor money have I none Yet shall we be merry, Hey ho, nobody home. Hey Ho, won't give in I will not let myself be taken in Again -- oh no my friend One of these days Out of the blue you'll start remembering And I won't care ’Cause I won't be there Close your eyes, I'll close mine Remember how much we once had And I'm so glad To be HOME AGAIN Always and always, now Where there was just one there'll be two And you won't be alone again I'm home again Close your eyes, I'll close mine Remember how much we once had And I'm so glad To be home again And on that day I swear I'll find the strength to stay away I won't give in I will not let myself be taken in Again -- oh no my friend Spirit move me every time I’m near you Whirling like a cyclone in my mind I could love you, build my world around you, Never leave you till my life is done Lady take me high upon a hillside High up where the stallion meets the sun Sweet Melissa, angel of my life time, Answer to all answers I can find Baby I love you Come, come, come into my arms Let me know the wonder of all of you Baby I need you, now, now, now and hold on fast Could this be the magic at last COULD IT BE MAGIC I WRITE THE SONGS that make the whole world sing I write the songs of love and special things I write the songs that make the young girls cry I write the songs, I write the songs MANDY, well you came and You gave without taking But I sent you away Oh Mandy, well you kissed me and Stopped me from shaking And I need you!!!! ”

Brahms - Faithful Love - USC Women's Chorale -Pgh (Live@HersheyPA)
1978-1979 --- “FAITHFUL LOVE” (Liebestrau) Op 3, No 1 by Johannes Brahms is performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR WOMEN (SSAA) at the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Education Association) convention in Hershey, PA. in January of 1979. Brahms' output of vocal music is greater than that of his instrumental music. He published thirty-one volumes of solo Lieder (songs), six volumes of duets and five of quartets. His settings up to 1860 are either strophic (each verse the same) or varied strophic. With the publication of the Songs, Op. 32, in 1864 we find Brahms' first through-composed settings, in which each verse is set differently. After 1877, through-composed songs nearly disappear and strophic settings find new life. Varied strophic forms appear at all points in Brahms' career. Although he set many poems by Goethe and two by Schiller, Brahms showed a predilection for the work of second-rate poets, usually choosing texts for their musical potential. All six of the Op. 3 songs date from 1853 except "In der Fremde," which was composed in 1852. The set was printed in 1854. Brahms revised "Liebe und Frühling I" in 1882, limiting his alterations to the re-voicing of a few chords and publishing the result in 1883. Brahms introduced himself to the Schumanns in Düsseldorf with the love-lament, "LIEBESTREU" (Faithful Love), a setting of a poem by Robert Reinick. Often cited as the best of Brahms' early songs, "Liebestreu" show the meticulous attention to detail typical of all Brahms' work. In E FLAT MINOR and with a plodding accompaniment, the song features a voice part that parallels the left hand of the piano part, usually a beat behind. At "Ein Stein wohl bleibt auf das Meeres Grund" the voice and piano are in unison. The varied strophic setting moves poignantly to E FLAT MAJOR (“O Mother”) in the third verse. I am sorry that the translation below is not quite what the Women are singing, but it gives you an idea of what the song is about. (Over the past 34 years please permit me to have misplaced some music that we have sung.) I have listed the Original German and the English Translation. Also, as this Concert was not professionally recorded, the sound has been compromised to a great degree. Please excuse this !!! As it is, it is fortunate that we have a recording of it at all (recorded live on a small tape recorder, this is the best that I can do). Translation: "Oh sink, sink your sorrow, My child, in the sea, in the deep sea!" A stone rests well at the bottom of the ocean; My sorrow, though, always comes up to the surface. "And the love that you carry in your heart, Destroy it, destroy it, my child!" If the flower also dies when one breaks it off, True Love is not so swift. "And your constancy, your constancy, It is only a word; into the wind with it!" Oh, Mother - even if the rock splinters in the wind, My constancy withstands it.” I DEARLY LOVE THIS SONG of Brahms and the Women did a wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL job in their performance. SUSAN MATTESON is the Accompanist. THANK YOU ALL !!!!!! --- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas

Bridge Over Troubled Water-You've Got A Friend (garfunkel-taylor)-Ayers, Klimcheck,Thompson @ USC -Pgh
1973-1974 - A great Year and many fine songs and solos. This is one of them – Three gentlemen (JEFF THOMPSON, JAMES AYERS, and BRUCE KLIMCHECK) approached me and said that they would like to audition for the Spring Concert with a medley of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER/YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND. The exact arrangement that they wanted to do was from “The Lettermen” album. They needed help with the voices so I agreed to help them. Their audition went very well so they were chosen to be on the 1974 Spring Concert. This recording is from the Live Performance on May10, 1974. I placed the Trio as the opening song of the Second Act. Behind the curtain, the Women’s Senior Choir was already to sing. I stepped off the stage to go to the outside rear of the auditorium to listen to them perform. As you can hear there wasn’t a ‘peep’ from the audience as the men sang the first part acappella. The trio captured the audience from the first note. It was a Great Performance and I was thrilled!!!!! Accompanying are Kyle McComb, Dave Brewton, Tom Jones, Scott Hahn, John Paulos, Bruce Ballon, Chris Solie, Jon Baker, John Volpe, and Mr. George McClintock on Organ. An important footnote: In the summer of 1974 (after graduation) I received a phone call from Mr. Paul Ayers that the “Lettermen” were appearing at the “Holiday House” in Monroeville, PA. He asked if the trio and I could attend their performance. We all went to see them and during the show James Ayers’ sister, Linda, went up on stage (unplanned) and told the “Lettermen” that their was a trio in the audience who could sing one of their songs. Being kind to her they asked about it and she said that they could come up right now and do it. What followed was extraordinary!!! The trio, dressed in the same clothes that had on at the Spring Concert (matching shirts and ties) went up on stage and started to sing. The orchestra started to play behind them and the “Lettermen” started to sing back-up vocals as the song progressed. (The audience thought that this was part of the show.) The audience gave them a wonderful applause and so did the “Lettermen”!!!! When they finished and the entire show was over – we all went backstage to visit with the “Lettermen.” They congratulated the Trio and talked to them about how they learned the exact arrangement. It was a great night and I will never forget it!!!! I want to thank Jeff, James, and Bruce for this great song, their dedication, and performance ---- I WILL NEVER FORGET IT !!!!!!! Those who heard it at USC won’t forget it either. Thank you ALL ------- THANK YOU.!!!!!!!!!! MR. Gielas. PS. The picture of the trio that is posted along with this song, was signed by each of the men. It is their actual signature.

Can't Get Used To Losing You (williams) - John Paulos @ USC -Pgh (Great)
1974-1975 --- “CAN’T GET USED TO LOSING YOU” --- written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman and Performed by at USCHS by JOHN PAULOS at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 8 & 9, 1975 Originally recorded by Andy Williams, this is really a nice, strong and rhythmically charged song. When John originally auditioned with this piece, I envisions the combo adding a lot of background to the solo. As we worked on it, it became more and more a favorite of mine. John Paulos and his sister, Flora, were great students and very talented. Both were PANTHEON CHOIR members and CHANTECLAIRS. I was so proud to know them and I thank them for their dedication throughout the years at USCHS. Accompanying are: Chris Solie, Bruce Ballon, Flip Kearney, Dave Norris, Kurt Brechbill, Kyle McComb, & John Volpe. THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE. Sincerely, Mr. Gielas. “Guess there's no use in hangin' 'round Guess I'll get dressed and do the town I'll find some crowded avenue Though it will be empty without you Can't get used to losin' you no matter what I try to do Gonna live my whole life thorough-loving you Called up some girl I used to know After I heard her say "hello" Couldn't think of anything to say Since you're gone it happens every day Can't get used to losin' you no matter what I try to do Gonna live my whole life thorough-loving you I'll find somebody, wait and see Who am I kidding, only me 'cause no one else can take your place Guess that I am just a hopeless case Can't get used to losin' you no matter what I try to do Gonna live my whole life thorough-loving you Can't get used to losin' you no matter what I try to do Gonna live my whole life thorough-loving you.”

Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man-Sorry Doesn't Make It Right -USC Women's Chorale -Pgh (Super)
1975-1976 --- “CAN’T HELP LOVIN’ THAT MAN OF MINE (‘Showboat’ – J. Kern/O. Hammerstein II) --- SORRY DOESN’T ALWAYS MAKE IT RIGHT (M. Masser & P. Sawyer) --- Performed by the USCHS WOMEN’S SENIOR CHOIR at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 20 & 21, 1976. Jerome David Kern (January 27, 1885 – November 11, 1945) was an American composer of musical theatre and popular music. One of the most important American theatre composers of the early 20th century, he wrote more than 700 songs, used in over 100 stage works, including such classics as "OL' MAN RIVER", "CAN'T HELP LOVIN' DAT MAN", "A FINE ROMANCE", "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES", "ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE", "THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT", "LONG AGO (AND FAR AWAY)" and "WHO?". --- ALL of them CLASSICS !!!!!! Although dozens of Kern's musicals and musical films were hits, only SHOW BOAT is now regularly revived. Songs from his other shows, however, are still frequently performed and adapted. "CAN'T HELP LOVIN' DAT MAN" with music by JEROME KERN, and lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II, is one of the most famous songs from their classic 1927 musical play SHOW BOAT, adapted from EDNA FERBER'S (1885-1968) novel (1926) by the same title. “SORRY DOESN’T ALWAYS MAKE IT RIGHT” was written by Michael Masser and recorded in 1974 by Diana Ross. It was originally released as a Motown single in February of 1975. I arranged both of these songs as a medley --- Of course the song “CAN’T HELP LOVIN’ THAT MAN” was the main thrust, but I found that the “Chorus” of the song “SORRY DOESN’T MAKE IT RIGHT” fit so well with the theme of a ‘Love’ that at times for the protagonist, is very sad and almost cruel. For the WOMEN’S voices, the combination of both songs was just “right.” AND, the WOMEN loved singing these songs. They really gave their heart and sang with wonderful, wonderful intensity. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE MEMORIES ---- I TRULY LOVED YOUR WORK AND DEDICATION AND THIS PERFORMANCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES !!!! --- WHY??? --- YOU SANG IT LIKE YOU LIVED IT --- YOU LOVED IT --- AND SO DID I !!!! ---- THANK YOU AGAIN, AND THANK YOU KYLE McCOMB FOR THE WONDERFUL ACCOMPANIMENT !!!! ---- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “No one ever loved you more And you're all I'm living for But now I'm screaming silently It's so hard to believe You're not in love with me Oh listen, sister I love my mister man and I can't tell you why Dere ain't no reason why I should love dat man It must be sumpin' dat de angels done plan De chimbley's smokin' The roof is leakin' in And he don't seem to care He can be happy With jes' a sip of gin I even loves him when his kisses got gin Fish got to swim and birds got to fly I got to love one man till I die Can't help lovin' dat man of mine Tell me he's lazy Tell me he's slow Tell me I'm crazy, maybe, I know Can't help lovin' that man of mine When he goes away Dat's a rainy day And when he comes back dat day is fine The sun will shine He can come home as late as can be Home without him ain't no home to me Can't help lovin' that man of mine. No one ever loved you more And you're all I'm living for But now I'm screaming silently It's so hard to believe You're not in love with me He can come home as late as can be Home without him ain't no home to me Can't help lovin' that man of mine.”

1976-1977 --- “THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ” written by Sammy Cahn & Jules Styne and performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR at the Annual Christmas Concert on December 17, 1976. How JOYFUL this Waltz is !!!!!! --- I had always liked this song and it has been recorded by a great many artists in the past. I knew that this would be a great song to add to the Christmas program. The lyrics, and a brisk ¾ time, lend to an enjoyable and elated feeling. It spells “CHRISTMAS” IN EVERY WAY !!!!!! THANK YOU PANTHEON CHOIR and DAVE BREWTON for your accompaniment !!!! ----- Everyone grab a partner and let’s do the “CHRISTMAS WALTZ !!!!! Enjoy ---- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas. “Frosted window panes, candles gleaming inside Painted candy canes on the tree Santa's on his way, he's filled his sleigh with things Things for you and for me It's that time of year when the world falls in love Ev'ry song you hear seems to say "Merry Christmas, May your New Year dreams come true" And this song of mine in three-quarter time Wishes you and yours the same thing, too. May all your dreams come true.”

1969-1970 ----- “COME SATURDAY MORNING – TRACES” – Performed by TOM THUNDER at the USCHS Spring Concert on May 15, 1970. Both songs were widely popular in the folk style at that time. Tom took these two song of the Sandpipers and the Classics IV and arranged them for himself. He, quite nicely, managed to fit them together to make a really unique and cohesive medley. I really liked his version and in the early ‘70’s this style of music was very, very popular. Ballads and folk were “IN.” Tom was a transfer student from Mt. Lebanon HS and came to the Pantheon Choir in the middle of the year (his Senior year). He was quite musical and this performance solidified his talent. Tom is also playing guitar on this Recording. THANK YOU TOM, I remember it ALL and YOU !!!! Enjoy -------- Mr. Gielas.

Corner of the Sky (Pippin) - Pollitt-McGill-Curley, Trio @ USC -Pgh (Just Beautiful)
1974-1975 ---- Julie Pollitt, Kim McGill, and Claudia Curley !!! What a beautiful song and performance!!! Their audition was outstanding and they carried through at the Concerts. I had never heard this song by Steven Schwartz (who also wrote “Godspell”) from “Pippin,” however, within the synopsis of the Musical: Pippin tells the scholars of his dreams to find where he belongs ("Corner of the Sky"), and the scholars happily applaud Pippin on his ambitious quest for an extraordinary life. This plot and dream is perfect for every human being. We all search our “Corner of the Sky” and hopefully we attain and find it. The Trio found theirs in this song and everyone loved it. As you listen, I know you will too. Thank you, Julie, Kim, and Claudia. I remember it so well and still see you singing when I hear it again and again. Performed Live May 8 & 9, 1975. Accompanying is Dave Brewton, Kyle McComb, John Paulos, Chris Solie, Bruce Ballon, & John Bickham. Thank you all ----- Mr. Gielas. Let’s all dream ---- “I've got to be where my spirit can run free - Got to find my CORNER OF THE SKY.” Everything has its season, Everything has its time. Show me a reason and I'll soon show you a rhyme. Cats fit on the windowsill- Children fit in the snow. Why do I feel I don't fit in anywhere I go? Rivers belong where they can ramble- Eagles belong where they can fly. I've got to be where my spirit can run free- Got to find my corner of the sky. Every man has his daydream, Every man has his goal. People like the way dreams have Of sticking to the soul. Rain comes after thunder, winter comes after fall, Sometimes I think I’m not after anything at all Maybe some misty day you’ll waken to find me gone. And far away you’ll hear me singing to the dawn. And you’ll wonder if I’m happy there A little more than I’ve been. And the answer will come back to you Like laughter on the wind. Rivers belong where they can ramble- Eagles belong where they can fly. I've got to be where my spirit can run free- Got to find my corner of the sky.

1971-1972 – “DAY BY DAY – O BLESS THE LORD MY SOUL” --- Performed by LEATRICE JOHNSON at USCHS on May 12, 1972 at the Spring Concert. This music from the musical “GODSPELL” by Steven Schwartz (Carnegie Mellon Graduate) was probably the most popular from the Musical. Lee auditioned all prepared with Combo and I was just thrilled !!!! ----- WOW !!! I didn’t do a thing to it except say “OK Lee, it’s all yours. It will be great.” - The voice is warm and so rich that it held the audience spellbound. The tempo gradually gets momentum and builds to a beautiful climax and then, as it began, withdraws to a somber but beautiful close. What more could a singer do with this medley. ---- It was all here --- so let us just enjoy it all over again ---- !!!!! I THANK LEE, and those who stayed in the background but gave so much to the final performance --- the COMBO ---- Dan Lind, Tris Coffin, Frank Vanalesti, Jon Baker, & Gary Gruber. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL !!!!! LOVE IT !!!! --- Mr. Gielas.

Dowland, John - Come Again, Sweet Love - USC Men's Glee - Pgh (Love it)
1970-1971 --- “COME AGAIN, SWEET LOVE” --- written by John Dowland, and here performed by the USCHS MEN’S GLEE CLUB (TTBB) at the Annual Spring Concert on May 21, 1971. “COME AGAIN, SWEET LOVE DOTH NOW INVITE” is a song by John Dowland (1563 – buried 20 February 1626). The lyrics are anonymous. Dowland's music can be performed by soloist and lute or by a small vocal group (typically SATB). The song is bitter-sweet, typical of Dowland who cultivated a melancholy style. It was published in his "First Booke of Songes or Ayres" (1597). John Dowland was an English Renaissance composer, singer, and lutenist. He is best known today for his melancholy songs such as "Come, heavy sleep" (the basis for Benjamin Britten's Nocturnal), "Come again, Sweet Love", "Flow my tears", "I saw my Lady weepe" and "In darkness let me dwell", but his instrumental music has undergone a major revival, and has been a source of repertoire for lutenists and classical guitarists during the twentieth century. When I was just out of College, I had an LP of Renaissance Music sung by a Men’s Choir, and this song was on the recording. I listened to this piece over and over again. I was attracted to the harmonic structure and the use of the interweaving of voices especially at the lyrics, “To see, to hear to touch, to kiss, to die,” and also in the second verse, “I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die.” I loved the antiphonal element that Dowland built throughout these sections. Not only that, but being a Romantic, I was deeply attracted to the text --- Sad but “PROMISING.” Once I began teaching Men’s Glee Clubs, this was a “no brainer.” It was one of my first choices to perform for all the men on our Program. So here is the performance of the USCHS Men’s Glee Club of 1970-1971 (42 years ago !!) performing now for you !!!! I hope you enjoy. It is sung A Cappella. THANK YOU MEN’S GLEE CLUB ---- I REALLY LOVE THIS SONG AND PERFORMANCE. !!!! ---- Mr. Gielas “Come again! sweet love doth now invite Thy graces that refrain To do me due delight, To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die, With thee again in sweetest sympathy. Come again! that I may cease to mourn Through thy unkind disdain; For now left and forlorn I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die In deadly pain and endless misery.”

After The Goldrush (niel young) -Talman-Newcomer-Spotz -USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh “AFTER THE GOLDRUSH” – a song by Niel Young- featured ANN TALMAN, SHARON NEWCOMER, & BARBARA SPOTZ as the soloists with the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR at the Easter Assembly on 1973. I really liked this piece and knew that it was be a great song for the trio and Pantheon Choir. It sounds simple and indeed it is, but that is what attracted me to the song. It is surreal and haunting and that is what still fascinates me today. Another unusual fact is that the title of the song never appears during the song. The opening lyrics evoke medieval imagery (the Past), the rest of the song seems to be set in a more contemporary time. The second stanza brings to mind man upsetting the delicate balance of nature with pollution, runaway technology, threats of (nuclear) war etc. The following lines clearly suggest that the earth is now dying as the chosen ones board spaceships to find a new planet to colonize. Imagery of tragedy (children crying) and hope for the future of mankind (flying Mother Nature's silver .....(the spaceships) seed (the chosen ones) to a new home. To me I see the three verses as three views of the past, present and future. Whatever – the song still haunts. I hope you enjoy remembering. The concert that this was recorded was from an Easter assembly in the Spring of 1973. Unfortunately, the small little recorder was near people enjoying a 'PARTY." There was coughing and rustling of potato chip bags throughout the entire piece. I have worked on this song for weeks to try to get it, at least, to a listening level. I wouldn’t ever want to discard the tape or recording since it was and is a part of history. Please bear with the Quality - TO BE ABLE TO HEAR IT AGAIN IS THE MAIN CONCERN. I congratulate ANN, SHARON, AND BARBARA for their lovely solo work and the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR for adding a much deeper and richer contrast. I thank you ALL, ------- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “Well, I dreamed I saw the knights In armor coming, Saying something about a queen. There were peasants singing and Drummers drumming And the archer split the tree. There was a fanfare blowing To the sun That was floating on the breeze. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies. I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for a replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I couldn’t help wondering why. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping we could have tried. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping we could have tried Well, I dreamed I saw a silver Space ships flying In the yellow haze of the sun, There were children crying And colors flying All around the chosen ones. There was a band playing in my head And I couldn’t help wondering why. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping we could have tried. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping we could have tried All in a dream, all in a dream That the loading had begun. Flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home in the sun. Flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home in the sun.”

1973-1974 - Aubrey-CLOUDS ---  written by David Gates and sung by him and ‘Bread’ and performed by the MEN’S GLEE of USCHS at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 9 & 10, 1974.

I had never heard of the name AUBREY before listening to this song.  Now I can’t forget it !!!!!! -------

What perfect songs for the Men's Glee - They sang this like they had experienced all the things that the songs tell about life.  Caryn Wunderlich is playing the wonderful flute obbligato.  Claudia Curley is playing the triangle which intones every time the word "Aubrey" is sung.  This medley was very emotional - Some guys from Men's Glee said that they could sing this forever !! - Well, even though they aren't actually singing it now, it has a life of its own and it will be sung and listened to - for years to come.    The medley uses both songs and inter-weaves them throughout.  -----

I loved, LOVED, LOVED this medley and the men who sang it.  I remember it ALL - Thank you for these special, special memories - ------ Sincerely, ------ Mr. G.

It is accompanied by Dan Lind, Claudia Curley, Caryn Wunderlich, and Jon Baker.

“And Aubrey was her name, I never knew her, but I loved her just the same, I loved her name.

See the clouds adrift so far below Ever changing as they come and go Makes me wonder why I'm up so high When really I am down so low

Of all the wonders I was one allowed I think that I would always choose a cloud Always brings my feelings right out loud Whether I'm ashamed or proud

And on this airplane comin' home to you Sometimes I think I've flown my whole life through My whole life….... through As I wing my way to you

And Aubrey was her name, I never knew her, but I loved her just the same, I loved her name.

Wish that I had found the way And the reasons that would make her stay. I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest. If I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the rest.

And God, I miss the girl And I'd go a thousand times around the world just to be Closer to her than to me.

See the clouds adrift so far below Ever changing as they come and go Makes me wonder why I'm up so high When really I am down so low

See the clouds they're giving life below In colors that the canvas cannot show Keeping secrets no one else could know For I'm the one who told them so

And God, I miss the girl And I'd go a million times around the world just to say She had been mine for a day

And Aubrey was her name, I loved her name.”

Bach - B Minor Mass 'Kyrie' (Opening Chorus-5 part fugue) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh

1973-1974 --- “KYRIE” from the B Minor High Mass by JOHANN SEBASTION BACH and performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR on May 9 & 10, 1974.

BACH --- only 4 letters --- but within those 4 letters contains the name of the most brilliant and most exceptional musician of ALL TIME !!!!!!

I say this unreservedly as my humble and honest opinion, but so say millions upon millions of people before me, now, and in the future.  The genius of Bach as a musician (Organist, Violinist, Violist, and Composer) was the beginning and end of the Baroque era as we know it.  He lived from 1685-1750, and composed music as a young boy until the day he died.  He was blind near the end of his life, so he dictated the music from his deathbed to his son.  As he was concluding a masterwork, “THE ART OF THE FUGUE,” his son notated on the manuscript --- “AT THIS POINT [HERE] THE MASTER DIED.”  The work was left unfinished

When I was a young boy I didn’t listen to Bach much --- I played some pieces on the violin and piano but I never really studied HIM.  To tell the truth, I didn’t understand his music and was afraid of him because to me it was much toooooo complicated.  It wasn’t until undergraduate school that I took a serious look at him and began to become familiar with his style and genius.  Until playing some of his Concertos and having to write 2 and 3 part fugues in Composition class, did I become a great admirer of the mind of this GREAT GENIUS.  He composed everything in his head before he wrote it down ---- he would know what the 232nd  measure was in the piece before he took to the pen. This astounded me !!!!  AND, to this day, it still does.  Compare this to an author knowing the exact words he will put on paper (without changing a word) of an entire novel.  You see why this astonished and captivated me.

The “KYRIE” that I have posted here is the opening Chorale of the B Minor High Mass.  It is a five part Fugue (SSATB). The complete printed score of the Mass has 352 pages --- broken into the major sections of the Catholic High Mass.  Historians are at a loss as to why Bach, as a Lutheran, composed music for a Catholic Mass.  Most probably he was commissioned and needed the money to provide for his family of 21 children.  I have also posted the score first page of the score of 352 pages so you can see what was a very small detail of what was already in his mind.

I want to THANK EVERYONE very much for the task of learning this and performing it several times that year (Once even at Baldwin High School at a Choral Festival).  This piece along with the “SANCTUS” from the B minor Mass (1972) that we performed were most probably the most challenging of all the anthems that we dared to do.

The accompaniment consisted of Barbara Spotz, Chris Regan, Caryn Wonderlich, Sarah Baxter, Jane Wheeler, Lise Potter, Shiela Bhat, Jon Baker, Chris Solie, and Mr. George McClintock on Organ.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THIS PERFORMANCE !!!! ---- The Challenge was COMPLETELY WORTH IT.

The complete text is only two words --- “KYRIE ELEISON” ----- (LORD, HAVE MERCY).

Bach - Now Sing We All (Cantata 4-Christ Lag In Totesbanden) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh
1977-1978 --- “NOW SING WE ALL – ALLELUIA !!!” --- by Johann Sebastian Bach from his Cantata No.4 and performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 11 & 12, 1978. BACH ---- BACH ------- BACH ----------BACH !!!!!!!!!!! GIVE ME MORE BACH !!!! THEEEEEE GENIUS !!!!!! “Christ lag in Todes Banden” (“Christ Lay the Bonds of Death”), also written as “Christ lag in Todesbanden,” BWV 4, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed it for Easter, probably in 1707 (at 22 years of age), and it is likely related to his move from Arnstadt to Mühlhausen. The chorale cantata is based on the chorale of the same name by Martin Luther. In this early work Bach used in all seven different vocal movements the unchanged words of the seven stanzas of the chorale and its tune as a cantus firmus. The central fourth stanza ‘Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen’ (‘It was an awesome war when death and life struggled’) contains the above Chorus as recorded by the PANTHEON CHOIR, and is sung by four voices, accompanied only by the continuo. This depicts the contest between Life and Death and, of course, Jesus ultimately WINS over death. In the final ALLELUJA (as recorded) of all four voices, the words are simply, “NOW SING WE ALL” – followed by the Jubilant ALLELUIA !!! – This signifies Christ’s’ ultimate victory over Death. Bach wrote music every day of his life (even to the point of on his death-bed). He composed over 300+ cantatas for the Church Calendar (over 6 years worth). Every week he composed a new Cantata and taught his singers and instrumentalists the music. In any of his Church assignments and as long as he was the Church Organist, he had to satisfy the need for new music each week. His wife (Anna Magdalena) helped write out the parts for Chorus and Orchestra. These Cantatas were only part of his daily writing. In addition to the Cantatas, he had to compose the Preludes and Postludes for the Organ for each service. And, all the while, trying to take care of his 21 children. HE WAS A BUSY, BUSY, BUSY MAN !!!!!! THANK YOU PANTHEON CHOIR FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE and THANK YOU GAIL MERTZ for the accompaniment. Sincerely, Mr. Gielas

Barry Manilow Medley Of Songs (#1) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Splendid!!) 1975-1976 ---- “BARRY MANILOW MEDLEY No.1 ---- Performed by the PANTHEON CHOIR of USCHS at Duquesne University Concert Hall in February, 1976 for the Music Majors and Faculty; at USCHS at the Easter Assembly in April, 1976; and the Spring Concerts on May 20 & 21, 1976 at USCHS. Choir loved this medley and it was the first of two medleys that I arranged of Barry Manilow’s music. The 2nd one became a year later in 1977. The 2nd medley performance was posted earlier on Facebook and Soundcloud. I believe that these songs of a sentimental and tender nature were really needed at this time and the success of Manilow’s record sales worldwide over the years have proven that many, many others did also. He was constantly being “panned” by critics who considered his music too syrupy or maudlin. But I contend you have to have a balance of styles and Barry provided that at the right time. Certainly everyone was listening to his songs and singing or humming them. AND, odds are that even you will be humming the tunes after you hear this performance. The medley consisted of these song titles: One Of These Days; Could It Be Magic; Home Again; I Write The Songs; and Mandy. Please do not ask where one or another song starts or stops. I can’t help you. I mixed them up to suit the flow of the music, lyrics, and overall intensity. However, I have given you the text below as we sang it, so that you could follow along. I hope that Barry is happy with the result. I know I certainly am. Thank you PANTHEON CHOIR for this outstanding performance and THANK YOU DAVE BREWTON for the magnificent accompaniment. Now --- everyone ENJOY !!! ------ Mr. G. (Lyrics follow) “Come, come, come into my arms Let me know the wonder of all of you. 1975-1976 ---- “A FRIEND OF MINE IS GOING BLIND” written by John Dawson Reed and performed by DONALD HUFFNER --- May 20 & 21, 1976 at the USCHS Spring Concerts. I had never heard of this particular song until Donald auditioned for the Spring Concert. I was so immediately taken by the words and performance that I knew this had to be one of the songs for the Concerts. It is beautifully done and I am so happy that we have a chance to hear it again. The recording is very fresh and like it was just sung. Please listen to the words and along with the great performance – think about our Blessings. THANK YOU DONALD -- ---- and THANK YOU SUSAN MATTESON for the accompaniment Truly a beautiful memory !!!!!!!!!!! ------ Mr. Gielas. John Dawson Read’s album ‘A Friend of Mine is Going Blind’ (1975) was dedicated to John’s friend and mentor Graham and the title track was written about him. Lyrics follow: "A friend of mine is going blind But through the dimness He sees so much better than me And how he cherishes each new thing that he sees They are locked in his head he will save them for when He's in darkness again. He can't read books And he can't paint pretty pictures But he understands so much better than I For he knows that all he's missing with his eyes Is more vivid in the mind of the man who's going blind And that's why he doesn't mind. Won't you sing Tommy Davidson of Things that you have seen Sing of winter's nights and summer’s lights And places you have been Of dew drops and forget-me-nots and Silver silky sheen Lain across the morning meadow on the hillside. Won't you sing Tommy Davidson of Things that you have done Sing of silver seagulls sailing into evening's golden sun Sing of city streets and villages and people on the run Tell the people how you know it Tommy Davidson. A friend of mine is going blind But through the dimness He sees so much better than me And how he cherishes each new thing that he sees They are locked in his head he will save them for when He's in darkness again."

From A Railway Carriage (alton rinker) - USC Women's Chorale -Pgh (So Great)
1972-1973 ---- “FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE” --- Text by R. L. Stevenson (1850-1894) and Music by Alton Rinker and performed by the USCHS WOMEN’S SENIOR CHOIR at the annual Spring Concert on May 11, 1973 (40 years ago). The music written in 1966, is a WONDERFUL COMPOSTION by Alton Rinker --- SIMPLY WONDERFUL !!!! We performed several of Alton Rinker’s pieces through the years --- they are ALL EXCEPTIONAL !!!! (I have posted them.) The tempo I took (rather rapid) was inspired from the first line of the Poem by Robert Louis Stevenson --- “Faster than lightening” (the original was ‘Faster than Fairies’) --- Alton Rinker changed several of the words of the Original Poem to fit the music. By doing this, I believe that the result is that the text lacks nothing from the original by Stevenson. What also attracts me to this work is the outstanding KEYBOARD ACCOMPANIMENT that Alton Rinker composed. It is so energetic and full of life that this is just what you would want and expect to accompany the text. The SENSATIONAL piano accompaniment in this recording is by LYNNE KOSTELLA !!!!! (Not a note missed !!!) “FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE” by Robert Louis Stevenson – Child’s Garden of Verses and Underwoods (1913) In this poem the poet shares his experience of a railway journey with us. He describes its speed as quite amazing. He presents natural scenes seen from the window of a railway carriage and that all the scenes of hill and plain were being crossed by a train as quick as one drop of rain follows another drop in a storm. From the window of his compartment of the train, buildings of stations were seemed as painted pictures. In these lines the poet says that from the window he sees a child climbing a steep ground by himself with difficulty. The child was also gathering black berries during the climbing. He then sees a homeless person who was looking at the train with amazement. There are some ladies in a village where they were making garlands of daisy flowers. There is a cart moving slowly in the middle of a highway. It was fully loaded and the driver was sitting on the top of the load. He sees a water mill and a river while travelling in the train. All these objects appeared and then disappeared so quickly that poet looked at them for very brief time and realized that they could never be seen again. They are ‘GONE FOREVER !!!!’ THANK YOU WOMEN’S SENIOR CHOIR OF 1973 and LYNNE KOSTELLA for the great Accompaniment !!!!!!!!! A BEAUTIFUL JOB BY EVERYONE !!!!!! Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “Faster than lightening, faster than witches, Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches; And charging along like troops in a battle All through the meadows the horses and cattle All of the sights - the hill and the plain Go hurrying by quick as the rain; And ever again, in the wink of an eye, Painted stations go whistling by. Here is a child who rambles and scrambles, All by himself and gathering brambles; Here is a tramp who stands there and gazes; And here is the green for stringing the daisies! Here is a cart away down the road Bumping along a man and a load; Here is a mill, and there is a river: Each a glimpse and GONE FOREVER! Faster than lightening, faster than witches, Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches; And charging along like troops in a battle All through the meadows the horses and cattle All of the sights - the hill and the plain Go hurrying by quick as the rain; And ever again, in the wink of an eye, Painted stations go whistling by.”

Godspell - 'Finale' w Medley of Songs -Tony Lambert -USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Outstanding) GODSPELL – 1974 Featured everyone in the Choral Dept. This section that you are hearing is just the Finale and the Medley that followed. The featured singer is Tony Lambert. The Instrumentalists for the Entire Medley (24 minutes) were Dave Brewton, Tom Jones, Scott Hahn, John Paulos, Jon Baker, Bruce Ballon, Chris Solie, Jim Ayers, John Volpe, & Mr. George McClintock on Organ. The combo worked on this in the evenings and also on Saturdays. I called this “Finale” the “mini-medley.” We worked on the entire medley for months and when all was said and done it believe it was a beautiful thing to listen to and also to watch. We had a slide show to go along with all the music that showed on three screens during the entire medley. I remember people crying and practically in a daze at the conclusion. It was over-whelming to many people!!! We also performed 2 concerts for the student body and I believe that is the only time everyone from school was at the assemblies in the auditorium to see and hear it. Word got around – don’t miss it!!! It was probably the hardest undertaking of all my years, but I was younger then and just kept going and going. Everyone was also young, so they all had the energy and dedication. The Choirs, themselves, responded at the dress rehearsals with their thunderous approval and I was confident this would be quite a show. It was!! – The entire Godspell Medley is 24 minutes – Maybe someday I will post it. I thank the entire Choral Department of 1974 for their time, work, and dedication to make this a memorable performance then and NOW!! It is FOREVER!!!! Thank you. Thank you. Mr. G. Goin' In With My Eyes Open (david soul) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Live Concert)
1976-1977 ---“GOING IN WITH MY EYES OPEN” --- Originally recorded by David Soul and here performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR at the Annual Easter Assembly on April 6, 1977. David Soul (of “Starsky & Hutch’) had recorded “Don’t Give Up On Us” (1976) and “Going In With My Eyes Open” (1977). Soul first gained attention as the "Covered Man" appearing on The Merv Griffin Show in 1966 & 1967, on which he sang while wearing a mask. He explained: "My name is David Soul, and I want to be known for my music." Well, it is true that he considered himself a singer, but his popular TV hit series enabled him to branch out into the pop music scene much later. “Don’t Give Up on Us” reached #1 in the USA and UK. “Don’t Give Up on Us” was performed by the Pantheon Choir at the Spring Concert in May 1977. “Going In With My Eyes Open” was recorded at USCHS one month earlier. It didn’t reach the popularity of the main hit (Don’t Give Up On Us) but for some reason, David Soul was very popular at USCHS and everyone wanted to hear his music. It seems that since he was photographed wearing a black and white jacket (very similar to the one at USCHS) it was rumored that he graduated from our school. This wasn’t true, but you can’t squash rumors once they start. Still the choir liked both songs, “DON’T GIVE UP ON US” (posted earlier) and “GOING IN WITH MY EYES OPEN.” This recording is from an Easter Concert and taped with a small recorder. The sound isn’t the greatest, but it is good that we have it to listen to again. THANK YOU PANTHEON CHOIR and THANK YOU DAVE BREWTON, JOHN LAWRENCE, JIM KELLY, DIANA BARBOUR, GEORGE VESTICH, AND JOHN MUMPER for the ACCOMPANIMENT !!!!!! ---- Sincerely, Mr.Gielas (The first phrase is missing from the recording.) “You smile that misty way And something in you said Remember the last time, don't fall in love (Chorus) Only this time I'm going in with my eyes open I won't make the same mistakes again This time I’ll see the signs and no hearts broken Won't be so blind and lose my way I walked so blindly in I fell and hurt my head I can't forget it I won't regret it I couldn't even stop it if I tried It'd be so nice again, don't let it end the same If you get uneasy, just let me know Don't lie or call me by somebody else's name No I couldn't take it I know it would break it And I want to give you everything I am Only this time I'm going in with my eyes open I won't make the same mistakes again This time I’ll see the signs and no hearts broken Won't be so blind and lose my way.”

Hello Again (neil diamond) - Kent Underwood @ USC -Pgh (Great)
1980-1981 --- “HELLO AGAIN” --- written by Neil Diamond and Alan Lindgren and performed here at USCHS by KENT UNDERWOOD at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 8 & 9, 1981. KENT UNDERWOOD was in the PANTHEON CHOIR AND CHANTECLAIRS during his years at USCHS. He was a great student and had a very quiet personality. But. His musicianship was wonderful and he was a GREAT asset to all the Choral Groups he participated in. I met him a few years after he graduated USCHS and he told me he was a cadet at the “CITADEL.” I haven’t heard from him since, but I am hoping that in the last 32 years his life has been richly rewarded. He truly was a FINE GENTLEMAN !!!! I THANK KENT UNDERWOOD for this performance & also his accompanists: BETH FULTON, ELIZABETH LEES, ELAINE NACEY, CHRIS McCANN, PAUL BORDERS, JEFF BECK, STEVE WORTH, & DWIGHT KENNEDY !!! THANK YOU ALL --- I REMEMBER IT SO WELL !!!!!! ----- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family descended from Russian and Polish immigrants. His parents were Rose (née Rapaport) and Akeeba "Kieve" Diamond, a dry-goods merchant. Diamond grew up in several homes in Brooklyn, attending Abraham Lincoln High School. At Lincoln, the school from which he received his high school diploma, he was a member of the fencing team. He later attended New York University on a fencing scholarship, specializing in saber, and was a member of the 1960 NCAA men's championship team; into his adult life he maintained his swordsmanship skills and continued to warm up with fencing exercises before his concerts. His life ambition was in Medicine, and explained this in a TV talk show. He said: “I actually wanted to be a laboratory biologist. I wanted to study. And I really wanted to find a cure for cancer. My grandmother had died of cancer. And I was always very good at the sciences. And I thought I would go and try and discover the cure for cancer.” However, during his senior year in New York University, a music publishing company made him an offer he could not refuse: an offer to write songs for $50 a week. This started him on the road to stardom. Diamond starred in a 1980 remake of the Al Jolson classic, The Jazz Singer, opposite Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnaz. Though the movie was not a hit, the soundtrack spawned three Top 10 singles, "Love on the Rocks", "HELLO AGAIN" and "America". “Hello again, hello Just called to say hello I couldn't sleep at all tonight And I know it's late But I couldn't wait Hello, my friend, hello It’s good to need you so It's good to love you like I do And to feel this way When I hear you say, hello Maybe it's been crazy And maybe I'm to blame But I put my heart above my head We've been through it all And you loved me just the same But when you're not there I just need to hear Hello, my friend, hello It's good to need you so It's good to love you like I do And to feel this way When I hear you say, hello Hello, my friend, hello Just called to let you know I think about you ev'ry night And I know it's late But I couldn't wait Hello.”

I'm A Song (sedaka) - Frank Vanalesti, USC Pantheon Choir @ Festival -Pgh (Terrific)
1971-1972 --- “I’M A SONG” ------- performed by FRANK VANALESTI and the PANTHEON CHOIR at a Choral Festival at USCHS in April 1973. “I’M A SONG’ --- Three little words ----- but a much GREATER song !!! --- written by Neil Sedaka & Howard Greenfield from Neil’s “Emergence” album. I first heard this Neil Sedaka album and immediately knew that several songs would be FANTASTIC for the Choral Department. The first choice was this song --- I just knew we had to do it. The lyrics are wonderful for it speaks of a “song” that begs to be sung. It was perfect. I didn’t have any music --- it wasn’t published as yet --- so I worked on the arrangement getting inspiration from the LP. The Choir received this song with great excitement and enthusiasm. We performed it at USCHS at the Easter Assembly but this particular concert you will hear is directly from a Choral Festival that we hosted for 6 different HS Choirs at USCHS. Among them Kiski, Moon, and North Hills. We were last on the program (all host Choirs went last) and this was the final number. I pulled out all the stops and even had the Combo on stage ready for this song. FRANK VANALESTI, a member of the Pantheon Choir, Chanteclairs, and Combo sang the solo. It was thrilling ------- just THRILLING !!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO made this possible ---- I loved it so much and Still get a pounding heart when I turn the speakers up and “see” it all again. WOW !!! Thank you ALL --- Mr. Gielas The Combo consisted of: Phil (Tris) Coffin, Scott Hefren, Frank Vanalesti, Jon Baker, Gary Gruber, Dan Lind, & Chris Regan. The lyrics follow: “I'm a song and I've waited so long For someone to come and sing me. I got a rhyme that I've had for some time But nobody wants to sing me. Let me show, the world, that I'm, not through. Let me touch, your heart, the way I used to do. Sing me, sing me, I got a song to be sung. Sing me, sing me, roll me around on your tongue. I got sunshine, I got a message to shout. Sing me, sing me, won't someone please let me out. Could I make you smile if I came back in style? Tell me would you want to sing me? Don't say I'm gone, never more to live on, Somebody's got to sing me. Let me fill, the air, with my, old song. If I let, you down, tell me where did I go wrong. Sing me, sing me, I got a song to be sung. Sing me, sing me, roll me around on your tongue. I got sunshine, I got a message to shout. Sing me, sing me, won't someone please let me out. I got music, I will share ----- I got music, doesn’t anyone care !!!” I DO !!!!!!! ------ Mr. G.

January Morning (Ian Tyson) -USC Pantheon Choir @ Duquesne Univ -Pgh (Beautiful)
1975-1976 ----- “JANUARY MORNING” ----- written by Ian Tyson and performed by the Pantheon Choir of USCHS at Duquesne University in January 1976. This particular song by Ian Tyson (Canadian duo - Ian & Sylvia) is from their 1967 album “So Much For Dreaming.” The original recording is really in a hard folk rock style --- which I didn’t really like. The song lent itself to a much more mellow ballad. So the Pantheon Choir’s performance is the result. I like it much better. Hope you do too. In several of my earlier posts of this particular Concert told of the fabulous acoustics of the Duquesne University Concert Hall. The acoustics were so fine that it was like singing in an ‘echo chamber.’ The sound swirled around the stage to the back of the auditorium and then back to the performers. We were able to hear everything and everyone ---- It was singing in “staggered positions.” --- Do you remember singing in “staggered positions?” This is what it was like !!!! The Choir sang this song ONLY ONCE and that was this concert at Duquesne University. So, as a result, this is the ONLY RECORDING of the Pantheon Choir singing this song --- Not the best sound from a little tape recorder, but we have it ---- and this is the important thing. A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE !!! -------- Lyrics follow: “Night clouds erase the rolling moon all across and down the winter skies. It leaves a wake of distant stars both shining down on you and I. But the fire kept it glowin’ and it warmed the shadows on the wall ---- JANUARY MORNING. Candles danced and trembled as the music swirled unto and fro. We dreamed of times forgotten old songs and stories that we know. Home from all our weary traveling leaving sorrows on the road behind --- JANUARY MORNING. These are moments apart my friend known only to you and I For old friends and lovers have no need to talk Of the now and the where and the why. Skies streaked to yellow the stars and twilight slowly die. Weariness from laughter the music splashing so in rhyme, That swept us to a wondrous world as it left us gazing on anew. JANUARY MORNING.” THANK YOU EVERYONE --- I REALLY ENJOY LISTENING AGAIN !!!! --- Mr. G.

1974-1975 --- “LOVE MIUST BE THE REASON” --- written by James Last, this song is performed by the CHANTECLAIRS at USHCS on May 8 & 9, 1975 at the Annual Spring Concerts. James Last produced an album with several beautiful songs. I chose several over a period of a couple of years to be performed at out Concerts. This is one of them. The other that was sung by James Last was “Face In A Crowd” sung by the CHANTECLAIRS of 1974 (posted earlier). “Why does the leaf turn its face to sunshine? Why dies the dawn come to end each night? Why does the road that unwinds so steeply Give us a view of such golden light? LOVE MUST BE THE REASON, yes Love must be the reason Every heart can fly in a cloudless sky On the wings of Love. Season follow season, yes, love must be the reason Just one boy and girl can wake up the world On the wings of love. Why does the sea take the weary river Into its arms like a child come home. How can a dream that’s beyond forever Hand touching hand means your not alone. LOVE MUST BE THE REASON, yes Love must be the reason Every heart can fly in a cloudless sky On the wings of Love. Season follow season, yes, love must be the reason Just one boy and girl can wake up the world On the wings of love.” Accompanying is John Paulos, Chris Solie, Flip Kearney, Kurt Brechbill, Claudia Curley, & John Bickham. 1969-1970 ---- “MARIA” from West Side Story and performed by DAVID WERNER at the USCHS Annual Spring Concert on May 15, 1970 (43 years ago). DAVE WERNER was a quiet and gentle man. He was so well respected as a PANTHEON CHOIR LEADER that he was elected as the first VICE-PRESIDENT of the Choir. He also belonged to the first group of CHANTECLAIRS at USCHS. He was a tall man and imposing (a USCHS Football player), but when he sang it was with so much humbleness and sensitivity. This was my first Spring Concert as Choral Director at USCHS. I loved this performance (again 43 years ago) and always will. I will not include the lyrics as his enunciation is perfect --- but I will tell you some of the background of this song and Musical --- “WEST SIDE STORY.” THANK YOU DAVID WERNER and THANK YOU BONNIE SULLIVAN (President of the PANTHEON CHOIR in 1970-1971) for this beautiful performance. THANK YOU ----- THANK YOU ----- THANK YOU -------- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “West Side Story” is an American musical with a book by Arthur Laurents; music by Leonard Bernstein; lyrics by Stephen Sondheim; and conception and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. After auditions in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia beginning in August 1957, the original Broadway production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 26, 1957 to positive reviews (Larry Kert as Tony, Carol Lawrence as Maria). The original 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold Prince, marked Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances before going on tour. The production was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical in 1957. Leonard Bernstein (the composer of the Music) told ‘Rolling Stone’: “Everyone told us that [West Side Story] was an impossible project ... And we were told no one was going to be able to sing AUGMENTED FOURTHS, AS WITH "MA-RI-A" ... Also, they said the score was too rangy for pop music ... Besides, who wanted to see a show in which the first-act curtain comes down on two dead bodies lying on the stage?... And then we had the really tough problem of casting it, because the characters had to be able not only to sing but dance and act and be taken for teenagers.” Well……. Everyone knows the result of the Musical --- It was ultimately a ‘smash’ hit, and traveled all over the world and was then made into a very successful film starting “Natalie Wood” as “Maria.” (The movie soundtrack, with Marni Nixon singing Maria's role (played in the film by Natalie Wood) and Tony (played in the film by Richard Beymer) sung by Jimmy Bryant.) On October 18, 1961, a film adaptation of the musical was released. It received praise from critics and the public, and became the second highest grossing film of the year in the United States. The film won ten Academy Awards in its eleven nominated categories, including Best Picture, as well as a special award for Robbins. The film holds the distinction of being the musical film with the most Academy Award wins (10 wins), including Best Picture. The soundtrack album made more money than any other album before it.

Maria (West Side Story) - Dave Werner, Vocal @ USC -Pgh
1973-1974 --- “MILK AND HONEY” --- from the Musical “Milk and Honey” by Jerry Herman and performed here by the USCHS Women’s Chorus at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 9 & 10, 1974. I always felt that this song, although was written with Israel’s independence in mind, could be sung for celebration of any nation’s patriotism. The WOMAN’S CHORUS did wonderful here !!!! They brought intensity and vibrancy to a song which talks of pride and dignity in OURS or any “homeland.” We performed this song several DIFFERENT years while I was director and it was always sung by the WOMEN’S CHORUSES. An aside: I added the words “AMERICA” at the end of the song. THANK YOU WOMEN AND THANK YOU LYNNE KOSTELLA for your WONDERFUL accompaniment. !!! --- I love it ------- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas Set In Jerusalem, Milk and Honey is a musical with a book by Don Appell and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The story centers on a busload of lonely American widows hoping to catch husbands while touring Israel and is set against the background of the country's fight for recognition as an independent nation. Herman was playing the piano for Parade, his most recent revue following I Feel Wonderful and Nitecap, when he was approached by theatre producer Gerard Oestreicher, who was seeking a composer for a project about Israel he hoped to mount on Broadway. He sent Herman and Appell to Israel to absorb the culture and hopefully find inspiration. Herman was determined that the musical not be a patriotic love letter and, while he liked most of what he saw during his visit, he incorporated some of what had not appealed to him ("rock and dust and sand") into the lyrics of the title song (‘Milk and Honey’).. Milk and Honey opened on Broadway on October 10, 1961 in the Martin Beck Theatre and ran for 543 performances. In addition to Molly Picon, the cast included Tommy Rall, Jose Gutierrez, and Metropolitan Opera stars Mimi Benzell and Robert Weede. Hermione Gingold replaced Picon later in the run. The musical director was Max Goberman. “This is the land of Milk and Honey This is the land of sun and song and This is the world of good and plenty Humble and proud and young and strong and This is the place where the hopes of the homeless and the dreams of the lost combine This is the land that heaven blessed and This lovely land is mine This is the land of Milk and Honey This is the land of sun and song and This is the world of good and plenty Humble and proud and young and strong and This is the place where the hopes of the homeless and the dreams of the lost combine This is the land that heaven blessed and This lovely land is mine What if the earth is dry and barren What if the morning sun is mean to us for This is the state of mind we live in We want it green and so it's green to us for When you have wonderful plans for tomorrow Somehow even today looks fine so What if it's rock and dust and sand, For this lovely land is mine This lovely land is mine. This lovely land is mine. This lovely land is mine. This lovely land is mine!” America !!!

Moldavian Suite - DUT 1958-1959 Robert Gielas, Violinist.mp3
1958-1959 --- “MOLDAVIAN SUITE” --- Duquesne University Tamburitzans --- Walter W. Kolar, Director --- ROBERT J. GIELAS, Violin Soloist (55 years ago) Moldavia (Romanian: Moldova) is a geographic and historical region and former principality in Eastern Europe, corresponding to the territory between the Eastern Carpathians and the Dniester river. An initially independent and later autonomous state, it existed from the 14th century to 1859, when it united with Wallachia as the basis of the modern Romanian state; at various times, the state included the regions of Bessarabia (with the Budjak), all of Bukovina and (under Stephen the Great) Pokuttya. The western part of Moldavia is now part of Romania and the eastern part belongs to the Republic of Moldova, while the northern and south-eastern parts are territories of Ukraine. So ---- in essence, Moldavia is no longer a separate principality as, in present day, three different countries all claim a third of it. However, the music and dances of this former region has remained. Since the pan-pipes are a national instrument of this region (and Romania), the Violin imitates the pan-pipe at the beginning of the Suite. Several of the pictures I have placed in the Utube video, are featuring the women dancing are in their national costumes of what is now Romania. At times, the music can be very nostalgic and sumptuous, but also greatly energetic and vigorous as you can hear in the second half of the Suite. The Igor Moiseyev Dance Company of Moscow, Russia, used this music to accompany their dances during their performances throughout the world. I was 18 when I performed the “Moldavian Suite” with the Tamburitzans throughout the year, and I remember it so well. It was my Mother’s favorite and, while at home, she would ask me to play it for her very often. I still play it occasionally and, when I do, it is always for HER !!! It was also one of my favorite solos during my time with the Tamburitzans (1958-1962). THANK YOU MR. WALTER W. KOLAR, DIRECTOR; THE DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY TAMBURITZANS OF PITTSBURGH, PA., USA; and all the MEMBERS OF THE 1958-1959 TAMBURITZANS FOR YOUR ORCHESTRAL ACCOMPANIMENT. I DEEPLY APPRECIATE YOUR WORK AND DEDICATION. Sincerely, Robert J. Gielas

1972-1973 ---- “FIRE, FIRE MY HEART” written by Thomas Morley and performed by the USCHS CHANTECLAIRS at the Annual Spring Concert on May 11, 1973. Thomas Morley (1557-1602) was admitted Batchelor in Music at Oxford, 1588, and became Gentleman of the Royal Chapels to Queen Elizabeth, in 1592. He published a learned Treatise in 1597, entitled A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Musicke, which he dedicated to William Byrd, who had been his Master. He died in 1602. I TRULY LOVE THIS PIECE !!!! --- It is sensational choral writing and requires clarity, intonation, and intense concentration. Since the piece is A Cappella this doubles the pitfalls. But, it is truly exciting - especially with the composers use of ‘suspensions’ in the voicing (SATTB). Of course, it is the text that is sentimental and self-pitying, but somehow with the use of the Fa La La’s, it becomes, in the end a tale, of “so be it” or “Amen.” This is BEAUTIFUL WRITING --- JUST BEAUTIFUL !!!! THANK YOU CHANTECLAIRS --- YOU “DONE”: VERY, VERY GOOD !!!! --- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “Fyre, fyre! My heart! My heart! Fa la la la la la O, help! O, help! O, help! Ay me! Ay me! I sit and cry me, and call for help, alas, but none comes nigh me. Fa la la la la la.”

Morning After (Poseiden Theme) - Sue Wagner - USC Chanteclairs -Pgh (Very Nice)
1972-1973 --- “THE MORNING AFTER” – This is the Theme from the blockbuster film “Poseiden Adventure” and performed by the USCHS CHANTECLAIRS at the annual Easter Concert on April 19, 1973. The soloist is SUE WAGNER. This song was written in March 1972 by 20th Century Fox songwriters Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, who were asked to write the love theme for The Poseidon Adventure in one night. In the end, the finished product was called "Why Must There Be a Morning After?" but changes by the record label resulted in the song's more optimistic lyric of "There's got to be a morning after". In the end titles of the film, it is called "The Song from The Poseidon Adventure", though it would become best known by the title of the single, "THE MORNING AFTER." THANK YOU CHANTECLAIRS & SUE WAGNER for your WONDERFUL performance & CASIE SOLIE for the GREAT Accompaniment !!! --- Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “It's not too late, we should be giving Only with love can we climb It's not too late, not while we're living Let's put our hands out in time There's got to be a morning after We're moving closer to the shore I know we'll be there by tomorrow And we'll escape the darkness We won't be searching anymore Oh, can't you see the morning after? It's waiting right outside the storm Why don't we cross the bridge together And find a place that's safe and warm? It's not too late, we should be giving Only with love can we climb It's not too late, not while we're living Let's put our hands out in time There's got to be a morning after We're moving closer to the shore I know we'll be there by tomorrow And we'll escape the darkness We won't be searching anymore.”

Let's see if I can all the names right - Susan Matteson, Caylia Chaiken, Diana Barbour, Betsy Brindle, John Lawrence, Tom Kikta, James Kelly, Bill Solomon, John Mumper, & Dwight Kennedy. They were the vocal abnd Insturmental ensembles who worked so, so, so, hard to get this song on the Spring Concert. What a chalenge!!! The rehearsals were on Satudays and evenings - and as a result - I believe they really did so well !!! They performed it in 1978. I loved it !!!!! I STILL DO !!!!!! ----- Thank you all, Sincerely, Mr. Robert Gielas NETHER LANDS - composed by Dan Fogelberg "Off in the nether lands I heard a sound Like the beating of heavenly wings And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain Of my soul as she rises and sings Anthems to glory and Anthems to love and Hymns filled with early delight Like the songs that the darkness Composes to worship the light. High on this mountain The clouds down below I'm feeling so strong and alive From this rocky perch I'll continue to search For the wind And the snow And the sky I want a lover and I want some friends And I want to live in the sun And I want to do all the things that I Never have done. Sunny bright mornings And pale moonlit nights Keep me from feeling alone Now, I'm learning to fly And this freedom is like Nothing that I've ever known I've seen the bottom And I've been on top But mostly I've lived in between And where do you go When you get to the end of Your dream? High on this mountain The clouds down below I'm feeling so strong and alive From this rocky perch I'll continue to search For the wind And the snow And the sky I want a lover and I want some friends And I want to live in the sun And I want to do all the things that I Never have done."

Never Can Say Goodbye (Jackson 5) - Sara Meador @ USC -Pgh (Simply Wonderful)
1974-1975 – “NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE” ------- Written by Clifton Davis - and sung by SARAH MEADOR at the Spring Concerts on May 8 & 9, 1975. How could anyone doubt the exceptional talent of SARAH? She was a Sophomore of 16 at USCHS when she sang this, and this fact alone is ASTOUNDING!!!!! As you listen you will hear a vocal maturity far, far, beyond the age of anyone sixteen years of age. She would win “Americas Got Talent” today – and every other contest out there !!!!! I had heard this song on the radio and I liked it – however, I remember SARAH coming in for the audition and my being spellbound !!!! It was FABULOUS !!!!! I simply put her on the list for call-backs, knowing that when I heard it again it was purely for my listening pleasure – in my heart she had already been chosen for the Concert. When we started to rehearse the song the only change I asked her to do is at the 2:20 mark. I wanted her to go from the low notes to the high (still being in low register) without taking a breath. SARAH has great power and breath control so the result at the Key Change is BRILLIANT !!!! Sarah owned this song --- this is the test of a true talent ----- you forget everything about what another recording artist did and you just hear it again but now “for the first time.” I still am amazed at this recording !!!! After so many years (37, in fact) I can still listen, and listen, and listen, over and over again. I want to save every note and not let it go. After hearing her sing, maybe all the listeners will agree with me. And if you do, please let her know!!!! The Accompaniment is provided by Dave Brewton, Bruce Ballon, John Volpe, John Paulos, & Kyle McComb. Please listen to an earlier post of SARAH MEADOR, CINDY METROSE, & RITA JACKSON singing “PARADISE.” It also is AMAZING !!!!!!!!!! BRAVO ----- BRAVO ---------- BRAVO SARAH !!!!! And to all that made this performance possible – I THANK SINCERELY !!!!!! ---------- LOVE IT ---- Mr. Gielas.

Nothin' Like A Dame (South Pacific) - USC Mens Glee Club -Pgh (A Blast)
1976-1977 – “NOTHIN' LIKE A DAME” - from ‘South Pacific’ from the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Sung by the Men’s Glee at the May Spring Concert in 1977. Four years earlier the High School had performed the musical “South Pacific.” The men’s song in that musical. “Nothin' Like A Dame,” was a showstopper. It was only natural that I choose this song for a future Men’s Glee. This year was it, and again it proved to be a favorite with the men and audience. When the men sang by themselves there always seemed to be an extra drive or spirit. I think it was a bit of ‘camaraderie’ but mostly “BRAVURA.” The boldness and daring, and possible ego, became the impetus behind their performances. I loved this spirit, but it had to be controlled. What do I mean? The men would like a song like this but I had to make sure the music was there before all the fun. “Nothin' Like A Dame” was one such song. Rehearsals always ended with the men whistling while leaving the room. After everything was learned ---- It was ALL GREAT FUN !!!! During the song I had several Girls from the Choir walk, somewhat evocatively, across the stage in front of the men as they whistled. The audience went wild (as you will hear) and it turned out to be a GREAT TIME and GREAT FUN for ALL. Enjoy it everyone !!! To all the guys in Men’s Glee I say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SPIRIT and DEDICATION. I LOVED IT ---- AND STILL DO !!!!!!!! ----- Mr. G.

One Tin Soldier (coven) - USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Really Nice!) 1977-1978 ----- “ONE TIN SOLDIER” by Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter and performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 11 & 12, 1978. “One Tin Soldier” (The Legend of Billy Jack) was performed by The Original Caste (1970). Later, this song was performed by Jinx Dawson and Coven in the movie "Billy Jack" (1971). "One Tin Soldier" tells the abstract story of a hidden treasure and two neighboring peoples, the Mountain People (portrayed as peaceful) and the Valley People (portrayed as warlike). The Mountain People possess a treasure on the mountain, buried under a stone. The Valley People send a message to the Mountain People demanding it. The Mountain People reply with an offer: they are willing to share the treasure with the Valley People. However, the Valley People instead decided to take it all by force, and in doing so kill all the Mountain People. The Valley People then move the stone and find only a simple message: "Peace on Earth". The song is a parable condemning prejudice and greed. The refrain contains lines about hating one's neighbor and cheating one's friend, indicating that despite trying to justify things like hatred and violence to oneself, it is wrong all the same. The lyrics of the chorus mention Biblical concepts such as Heaven, Judgment Day (Last Judgment), and justification, leading many to believe that the song had Judaic and Christian origins. Specifically, it contains a notable line about using religion ("Do it in the name of Heaven") as an excuse for prejudice or violence, indicating that doing so will not necessarily be viewed as righteous by God when facing the Last Judgment. This is the second time that I posted “ONE TIN SOLDIER.” The first time (posted earlier) consisted of the Quartet of Ann Talman, Sharon Newcomer, James Ayers, and Jeff Thompson. This time we sang the same arrangement but with the PANTHEON CHOIR. Both performances are Great !!! Take a Listen please !!! THANK YOU PANTHEON CHOIR and SUSAN MATTESON for the Accompaniment. ---Sincerely, Mr. G. EVERYONE ENJOY !!! ---- Mr. G. “Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, Justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgment day, On the bloody morning after.... Listen, children, to a story That was written long ago, 'Bout a kingdom on a mountain And the valley-folk below. On the mountain was a treasure Buried deep beneath the stone, And the valley-people swore They'd have it for their very own. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, Justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgment day, On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away. So the people of the valley Sent a message up the hill, Asking for the buried treasure, Tons of gold for which they'd kill. Came an answer from the kingdom, "With our brothers we will share All the secrets of our mountain, All the riches buried there." Now they stood beside the treasure, On the mountain, dark and red. Turned the stone and looked beneath it... "Peace on Earth" was all it said. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, Justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgment day, On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away.”

Pilgrim's Chorus and Heil Der Gnade (Wagner - Tannhauser) -USC Pantheon Choir -Pgh (Super!)
1972-1973 ---- “PILGRIM’S CHORUS and HEIL DER GNADE” – from the opera “Tannhauser” by Richard Wagner and performed by the USCHS PANTHEON CHOIR on May 11, 1973 at the Spring Concert. Wilhelm Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813 – February 13, 1883) was an influential German composer, music theorist, and essayist, primarily known for his operas –---- “Taunhauser” being one of the best known and most performed. This piece is well known in the classical field and I knew it would be one of the most DRAMATIC and TAXING anthems to learn and perform. To opera goers who saw this on the program probably wondered, “How are they going to do this?” The anthem from the opera was a major, major challenge for the choir ---- MAJOR !!! First of all Wagner wrote it for a men’s professional choir singing in FOUR parts – TTBB – and the women’s parts in SSAA. Combined we have basically SSAATTBB. I heard a German Choir sing this and decided that the Challenge was worth it. The pilgrims Chorus is traditionally always sung separately long before the Women’s ‘Heil, Heil’ (Hail, Hail) which is the last Chorus of the Opera. I decided to combine them featuring the Men first in the Pilgrim’s Chorus and then follow it with the Women’s Chorus (the finale of the opera) with the a rousing repeat of the men’s Pilgrim’s Chorus at the very end. What a Challenge for HS !!!! But I never told the students the difficulty of works --- we just ‘tackled’ everything like it was going to be “CAKE.” If I told them the chorus parts of the men would be so tough --- we would have all been defeated before we started. It wasn’t until it was all put together and ready to be performed that I had the “jitters.” One performance ---- One Shot !!!! ---- I had to trust everyone !!!! IT WORKED !!! Barb Spotz worked on the fiendishly difficult Piano accompaniment and Mr. George McClintock used to come to Choir practice frequently to play the Organ part (on piano) with us. We rented an organ for the evening concert and performed it ONLY ONCE !!!! THIS IS IT !!!! -- THANK YOU CHOIR for all the work and dedication it took for this anthem ---- I believe it was worth it and still do ---- BRAVO !!! BRAVO !!!! The lyrics follow exactly as we sung them: (Men) “Once more, with joy, oh my home, I may meet thee. Once more ye fair flowery meadows I greet ye. My pilgrim staff henceforth may rest Since heaven’s sweet peace is within my breast! The sinner’s plaint on high was heard Accepted by a gracious Lord The tears I laid before His shrine Are turned to hope and joy divine, O Lord be praise eternal Thine. The blessed source of Thy mercy Overflowing on souls repented Who seek Thee bestowing; Of hell and death I have no fear My gracious Lord is ever near. Hallelujah!!! Hallelujah!!! Eternally --- Eternally !!!! (Women) Heil !!! Heil !!! The Lord hath marvels wrought!! Redemption He to all hath bought One night in blest propitious hour He left a sign of His dread power; The barren staff of priestly rule He made to bloom with summer’s green; Now man’s curse dot the Lord annul His pitying love shall make us clean !! Declare it loud through every land, None who condemn at last shall stand! High doth He throne ‘bove sin and death. Reigning in mercy, not in wrath!! (Combined Pilgrims) Halleluia!!! The Lord Himself thy bondage hath riven, Go enter in with the best in His heaven Halleluia Halleluia !!!!!”

Preludium (Gregorian Chant) - USC Women's Chorale -Pgh (So Gorgeous) 1970-1971 – Called the “Preludium,” this is the music and lyrics taken from the Movie and Broadway play – “The Sound of Music” by Rodgers and Hammerstein. I wanted all the women of the Pantheon Choir and the Woman’s Chorus to sing this anthem together. We rehearsed several evenings in the ‘Old LGI’ Room (too many women to fit into the Choral Room-roughly 140) and when it was finally performed on May 21, 1971, the result was stunning. It is so etherial, peaceful, and serene. I loved the performance and I could listen to this many times over. The text follows (it was sung in Latin): “Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen. Rex admirabilis Et triumphator nobilis, Dulcedo ineffabilis, Totus desiderabilis”. ----- is literally translated: Glory [be] to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. King most wonderful! Thou Conqueror renowned! Thou Sweetness most ineffable! In whom all joys are found! Thank you everyone – a wonderful, wonderful performance and memory. --- Mr. G

Rimsky-Korsakov - 'Glory' (Slava) - Baldwin Highlander Choir - Pgh (Thank You!)
1968-1969 --- “GLORY” (Slava - "Слава") ---- By Rimsky-Korsakov Op. 21, with a text by Milton Pascal and sung by the BALDWIN HIGHLANDER HS CHOIR- Pittsburgh, PA., Under the Direction of Mr. Robert J. Gielas and performed in May of 1969. Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), composer, conductor, and pedagogue, was a member of the Russian "Mighty Five." Rimsky Korsakov's music is known for vitality and brilliant orchestration. Many of his melodies came directly from the folk songs he collected, and of his 15 operas, 14 were inspired by Russian folklore. He was largely responsible for establishing the rigor and uncompromising professionalism of the Russian school of the turn of the century. He was extremely nationalistic and he very often incorporated “National Hymns” within his music. “GLORY” is one such case. He was one of the most brilliant of orchestrators and, along with Ravel & Respighi, is accepted as one of the most well known and the best. Rimsky-Korsakov died on June 21, 1908. His establishment of professional mastery of technique as the exclusive route to musical legitimacy is a legacy still preserved in Russia. This arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s setting of the Russian National Hymn retains the character of the original scoring for chorus and orchestra. Here it is performed as a SSAATTBB choral arrangement with a keyboard accompaniment for two pianos and bells. “GLORY!!!” Glory unto our nation; Glory, ever may her banners keep waving on high—Glory!!! To her brave sons who e’re keep adding new heights to her Glory !!! On our land may she stand for whatever is right. Glory !!!! We do pledge our unswerving devotion; we do pledge to you all our devotion. Rockport Sunday (tom rush) - Kathy Fallon, Solo Guitar @ USC -Pgh (Just Wonderful)
1971-1972 --- “ROCKPORT SUNDAY” – written by Folk Singer TOM RUSH and performed here by KATHY FALLON on Guitar at the Annual Spring Concert on May 12, 1972 (over 40 years ago). Tom Rush (born February 8, 1941) is an American folk and blues singer, songwriter, musician and recording artist – and still performing special concerts. Tom Rush was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on February 8, 1941. He is the adopted son of a teacher at St. Paul's School, in Concord, New Hampshire. Tom began performing in 1961 while studying at Harvard University after having graduated from the Groton School. He majored in English literature. Many of his early recordings are versions of Lowland Scots and Appalachian folk songs. He regularly performed at the Club 47 coffeehouse (now called Club Passim) in Cambridge, the Unicorn in Boston, and The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. On December 28, 2012 Rush appeared at Boston Symphony Hall to celebrate fifty years in the music biz. This song – the gorgeous “Rockport Sunday,” is from his album called “The Circle Game” (released in 1968). If you like Folk, part Blues, a little bit Country, even a little rock and pop flavor --- this one has it all --- this album and another one simply called “Tom Rush” is a must. In 1971, I went to see Tom Rush in person at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland in Pittsburgh PA. It was a sensational night and he performed many of his songs. This piece “ROCKPORT SUNDAY” was among them. In asking Tom Rush about “Rockport Sunday --- this is what he said : Question: How did “Rockport Sunday" come about? Is it about Rockport, MA? “I wrote the piece as a ‘sound impression’ of a generic small ‘seaport’ town; was going to call it Newport Sunday but decided that Newport carried too much baggage, so I switched it to ‘Rockport.’ I did have Rockport, MA in mind, but almost any Rockport would do, AS LONG AS IT HAS AN OCEAN.” I had heard this song years before I asked Kathy Fallon to learn it. To me the song originally written and played by Tom Rush, was so nostalgic and quite romantic in a melancholy way. I used to just listen to it and let it calm me and give me a sense of stillness and peace. Since Kathy Fallon was accompanying many of the soloists on her acoustic guitar at USCHS, I asked her to listen to a little tape cassette of this particular piece. I told her that if she could learn it, I would showcase it on the Spring Program with just HER, HER GUITAR, and the SPOTLIGHT. THIS IS THE RESULT !!!! A BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL RENDITION OF THIS PIECE !!!!!! Oh, how glad I am that I asked her, and that she learned it for the Spring Concert. There wasn’t a sound during her performance – the audience was mesmerized !!!!! Remember, she had NO printed music; she had to listen to the tape and learn everything – the inflections, chord structure, harmonics, fingering ---- just Kathy alone working her special magic on both ends of the guitar frets masterfully---- in short --- SHE HAD TO LEARN IT ALL BY JUST LISTENING AND THEN PLAYING IT ON HER ACOUSTIC GUITAR !!!! SUCH BRILLIANT TALENT !!!! THANK YOU KATHY FALLON for your work and your continued dedication for all the Students in the Choral Department during your years at USCHS !!! --- I still LOVE to listen to your work --- I know that now everyone will also be grateful to have heard you play. 1971-1972 - "ALLELUIA" by Randall Thompson ------ This was recorded by the Pantheon Choir in April of 1972 at a Choral Festiva we hosted at USCHS. I spoke about Randall Thomspon (composer) for "TheLast Words of David" posted earlier. This ALLELUIA is deemed by the Choral World to be thee outstanding "tour-de-force" for all porfessional Choirs throughout the world. Everyone wants to sing it and everyone does. How good or bad the performace is up to the listener. It is one of the greatest challenges for a Choir since the piece is Acappella and at any time can fall apart because lack of intensity and intonation. I heard, many years ago, a Choral Festival at Lincoln Center in NY, (comprising of at least 800 singers from Choirs from all over the world) this anthem, "ALLELUIA," and it was performed by ALL the choirs combined as their Finale. I am not going to say much more. I LOVE THIS ANTHEM !!!!! I hope you do also. You can't know how I appreciate EVERY NOTE of this performance!!!!! I hang on to each note and don't want to leave it. ----- Bravo to the Pantheon Choir!!!!!!!!!!! You've done WELL!!!!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! ========= Now enjoy it all over again 40 years later. ------------------ Mr. Gielas.

Through The Eyes Of Love (Ice Castles-manchester) - Linda Nourie @ USC -Pgh (Lovely)
1978-1979 --- “THROUGH THE EYES OF LOVE” – This was written by Marvin Hamlisch and the Bergmans for the Movie “Ice Castles” and originally recorded by Melissa Manchester --- This song is performed by LINDA NOURIE at the USCHS Annual Spring Concerts on May 11 & 12, 1979. What a LOVELY WOMAN and WONDERFUL performance by LINDA NOURIE !!!! She had a terrific range and even though she sang alto in the PANTEHON CHOIR and CHANTECLAIRS, sometimes her songs required the high register. In doing this it seemed to be a natural transition for her, and the range of the song never handicapped her quality and style of singing. I wonder if she ever went on to sing professionally??? She certainly could have !!! A GREAT PERFORMANCE !!!! TREMENDOUS !!!! THANK YOU LINDA and THANK YOU Accompanists: SUSAN MATTESON, BETH FULTON, DWIGHT KENNEDY & STEVE FRANZ . JUST SENSATIONAL !!! Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “Please, don't let this feeling end It's everything I am Everything I want to be Finding out what's mine now Finding out what's true Since I found you Looking through the eyes of love Now, I can take the time I can see my life And it comes up shining Reaching out to touch you I can feel so much How I found you Looking through the eyes of love Now, I do believe That even in a storm we'll find some light Knowing you're beside me, I'm all right Please, don't let this feeling end It might not come again And I want to remember How it feels to hold you How I feel so much Since I found you Looking through the eyes of love.”

Twelve Days 'After' Christmas (silver -Humorous) - USC Chanteclairs (Chorale) -Pgh
1971-1972 --- “THE TWELVE DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS” – written by Frederick Silver and performed by the USCHS CHANTECLAIRS at the Annual Christmas Concert on December 21, 1971. This novelty song was very popular with singing groups in the early 70’s, and at USCHS it was no exception. Sometime the Chanteclairs incorporated some fun into their part of the program and this is one of those times. When they sang this outside USCHS it was always well received by the various audiences. It was new and fresh and was an innocent parody of the original “Twelve Days of Christmas.” THANK YOU CHANTECLAIRS for this performance and I still “chuckle” when I listen. Sincerely, Mr. Gielas “The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight. And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite. Then, with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge, That my true love, my true love gave to me. The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves And very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves, My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me. The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup; I had to use the three French hens to make some chicken soup. The four calling birds were a big mistake, For their language was obscene The five gold rings were completely fake And they turned my fingers green. The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay: I gave the whole darn gaggle to the ASPCA. On the seventh day what a mess I found: All seven of the swimming swans had drowned, My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me. The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect, I bundled up the . . . Eight maids a-milking, Nine pipers piping, Ten ladies dancing, 'Leven lords a-leaping, Twelve drummers drumming (spoken) Well, actually I kept one of the drummers for myself. And sent them back collect. I wrote my true love, "We are through, love" And I said in so many words, "Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the birds!" (four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree).”

Wake Up! My Friend (R Gielas) -USC Chanteclairs (Chorale) -Pgh (THANK YOU)
1977-1978 --- “WAKE UP, MY FRIEND” -- Words and music by Robert J. Gielas and performed by the USCHS CHANTECLAIRS at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 11 & 12, 1978. I wrote this piece for the Chanteclairs in the Spring of 1978. I had the thought that “we do not live in this world alone,” and we have to count on others for help and support. Sometimes we have to learn this by a tender but firm “slap on the wrist,” as self-pity only leads to further sadness and woe. So someone, at times, has to tell us to “Wake Up.” And coming from a friend is the best counsel and advice we can receive and trust. This is the meaning of this song I THANK YOU CHANTECLAIRS FOR SINGING THIS ---- I am VERY PROUD of your performance !!!! The Accompanists are Lisa Ludwig and John Mumper. THANK YOU ALL !!!!!!!! --- Sincerely, Mr. Robert Gielas “WAKE UP, MY FRIEND don’t you know time has caught you dreamin’. Open your eyes and see “today.” Take all your cares, put them aside just for now And here’s a hand to help you on your way. Wake up, my friend brush the clouds from your sleepy eyes. The sun is warm and aglow. You’ve been all alone so may I offer this advice “It’s morning and it’s time you said hello.” You’ve been on a daydream stage that’s lasted far too long Acting out a past that one day you’ll regret. Move a little closer; listen to reality, And take me along to help you to forget. Life’s busy ways get us down for a little while. You have to learn these are few. Just like the gray skies that soon will disappear, Remember all the good times that you knew. Wake up, my friend here’s a toast to a new beginning. Take hold and climb to the top. Enjoy today with the love all your friends are giving, Then say, “Today never stops.” Believe that all the things you wish for can come true. And then, believe the best is here for you. WAKE UP, MY FRIEND --- It’s time --- my friend.”

1975-1976 --- “WITH YOU” --- from the Musical “Pippin” and performed at USCHS by the duo of CHERYL SCALISE & BRENDA MILLICAN at the Annual Spring Concerts on May 20 & 21, 1976 (37 YEARS AGO!!!!!). This song was written by Stephen Schwartz of “GODSPELL” fame. Schwartz was born in New York City, the son of Sheila Lorna (née Siegal), a teacher, and Stanley Leonard Schwartz, who worked in business. He grew up in the Williston Park area of Nassau County, New York, where he graduated from Mineola High School in 1964. He also studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School while attending high school. Schwartz graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968 with a BFA in drama. What a wonderful duet of this beautiful song. JUST WONDERFUL !!! ---- What can be said except superlatives in every facet of musicianship. The blend is so excellent that I do not know who is singing and when. Each singer is placed on different microphones but the similarities in voices is so close that I would have to ask them as to who is singing and when. Just a SPECTACULAR BLEND --- INTONATION --- SENSITIVITY ----- and BREADTH CONTROL. I am a strong supporter of all of the above but when you have only two singers, there is no covering. Everything is exposed !!! ---- Here, the breadth control is amazing --- you never feel as though the singer is out of breath. Beautiful intonation is throughout !!!! Listen with earphones for exceptional voice placement !!!! ------- WOW !!! --- Just SO SPECIAL !!!!! I congratulate CHERYL and BRENDA for this performance. Just breathtaking !!!! And thank you KYLE McCOMB for the lovely accompaniment. LOVE IT !!!! ---- LOVE IT !!!! --------- LOVE IT !!!! ---- AND ALWAYS WILL !!!!!!!! SINCERELY, Mr. Gielas “And time weaves ribbons of memory To sweeten life when youth is through But I would need no memories there If I could share My life …………. My days are brighter than morning air Evergreen pine and autumn blue But all my days are twice as fair If I could share My days with you My nights are warmer than firecoals Incense and stars and smoke bamboo But nights were warm beyond compare If I could share My nights with you To dance in my dreams To shine when I need the sun With you To hold me when dreams are done And oh.... My dearest love If you will take my love Then all my dreams are truly begun And time weaves ribbons of memory To sweeten life when youth is through But I would need no memories there If I could share My life with you.”

Worst That Can Happen-If You Must Leave My Life (webb-harris) - USC Mens Glee -Pgh (WOW)
1975-1976 --- “FIRST HYMN FROM THE GRAND TERRACE – THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN – IF YOU MUST LEAVE MY LIFE” ----- A Medley performed by the Men’s Glee Club at USCHS on May 20 &21, 1976. All the songs were composed by Jimmy Webb and recorded by Richard Harris. ----- Jimmy Webb’s lyrics are sometimes enigmatic and mysterious but here in most of the lyrics we can assume that the man and woman have loved and lost. Most of Jimmy Webb’s music follows this concept. I’m not a psychoanalyst so I’ll not delve into the “Why” of it. What really attracted me to these songs was how they were interpreted by Richard Harris (not the greatest voice, but certainly very dramatic and captivating). Now to the music that the men sang ---- I was afraid that we wouldn’t get this learned in time. There were only three evening rehearsals for this and the other songs (“Armed Service Medley” & “The Animals a-Comin’”) that the men had to sing on the program by themselves. And, beside the difficult arrangement, there were so many words. (Many – Many words) and the medley was well over five minutes long and very challenging. But in the end they did the work and were dedicated to getting it right. The result, for me and the audience, was GREAT !!!! ----- especially since these songs were NOT known by the general public. The men had to sell their performance. They DID and I am so proud of their work. THANK YOU MEN OF THE 1975-76 CHORAL DEPARTMENT. Accompanying is Claudia Curley, Tom Jones, Bill Shane, John Lawrence, & John Volpe. THANK YOU EVERYONE !!!! ----- I LOVE IT !!!!! ----- Mr. G. --------- Lyrics follow: (First Hymn from the Grand Terrace) “Oh, I loved you – Oh, how I loved you. If I’ve been born a different man I might have tried to understand. I might have stayed just safely in your hands; Though it cannot be. There was a hill we climbed and a nursery rhyme Went flying across the waving grass Like silver bells Against the curtain that the sky had made and so we played. And now she’s gone and I'm alone And though they say I should be Safe, secure, and sane - I remember yesterday, And the games that children play. (The Worst That Could Happen) Girl, I heard you're getting married I heard you're getting married - Heard you're getting married This time you're really sure. And this is the end They say you really mean it This guy's the one that makes you feel So safe, so sane and so secure And baby if he loves you more than me Maybe it's the best thing Maybe it's the best thing for you But it's the worst that could happen to me. Girl, I don’t really blame you for having a dream of your own. Girl, I don’t really blame you - A woman like you needs a house and a home. Girl, I’ll never get married, never get married You know that’s not my scene. But a girl like you needs to be married. I've known all along you couldn't live forever in between. And baby if he loves you more than me, Maybe it's the best thing, Maybe it's the best thing for you, But it's the worst that could happen to me. (If You Must Leave My Life) But girl, if you must leave my life You’ll leave me alone. And baby, long before you leave my life Be sure you have your own. Standing in my eyes You'll always be the reason. But I knew I couldn't keep you for good, And I'm not even sure that I should. But girl, if you must leave my life Consider every part. And girl, I don’t really blame you - A woman like you needs a house and a home. Baby if he really loves you more than me Maybe it's the best thing - Maybe it's the best thing for you. But it’s the worst that could happen - The worst that could happen - The worst that could happen to me.”
